PH1004: Assignment 1 Exercise 4 - The Fashion Magazine

For my two magazines I have chosen to compare Elle UK November 2014 issue and Harper’s Bazaar USA October 2014 issue.

Elle magazine was founded in France in 1945. Elle in French translates to ‘She’ I thought that this works well with the target audience of young women aged 18-26 who are style conscious and have a passion for shopping. This is a monthly publication and is £4.00 to buy a single copy.

Harper’s Bazaar magazine was founded in America in 1867. The target audience is woman aged 30+ who are sophisticated and image conscious. This is a monthly publication and is £4.20 to buy a single copy.

In comparison both magazines are aimed at an upper-middle and upper class markets. This is shown by the layout of both magazines and the type of adverts in the publication; both magazines have a high quantity of high-end adverts  which advertise premium market level products and brands.

The cover of both magazines are quite text heavy giving the titles to some of the articles inside and telling you that there is an article about the celebrity on the cover of the magazine. The use of colour of the cover of the magazines works well because there is the use of bright bold colours which all colour code together. Both of these covers work well in attracting their target audience with the bold colours used and making them stand out on the shelves.

Both publications work well to keep their image the same by using the same layout in each issue. They both work well to appeal to their target audience and keep their upper market level standards of each issue published.

In conclusion I feel that both publications appeal well to their chosen target markets by the way they style their image and with the content in their issues. Even though both publications have many similarities and a few differences they are both targeted at different markets.
